Artemisia afra Project

Artemisia afra Project

Harnessing the healing power of nature to combat fever-related illnesses in Ugandan communities through sustainable cultivation and education.

About the Plant

What Is Artemisia afra?

Artemisia afra is a medicinal plant with a long history of use in African traditional medicine. It is known for its effectiveness in managing fever, respiratory conditions, and related illnesses.

Fight Fever Mende works to make this plant accessible to local communities through seed distribution, land acquisition, and comprehensive training — enabling households to grow and use it sustainably.

A Natural, Accessible Solution

Artemisia afra can be grown in household gardens, making it an affordable and accessible healthcare resource for families who lack access to conventional medicine.

What We Do Under This Program

🌱

Seed Procurement & Distribution

We procure high-quality Artemisia afra seeds and distribute them to community households and demonstration gardens across Mende and Wakiso District.

🌼

Demonstration Gardens

We establish community demonstration gardens that serve as training grounds and model sites where farmers can learn best practices for cultivation and care.

📚

Household Training

We train households on planting, harvesting, preparation, and the safe, responsible use of Artemisia afra as a complementary approach to fever management.

Why It Matters

The Impact of This Work

Fever-related illnesses are among the leading causes of illness and death in Uganda, particularly for children and the elderly. Access to affordable treatment is a major barrier for many families.

By empowering communities to grow and use Artemisia afra, we are building household-level health resilience — reducing dependence on costly medication and building long-term agricultural livelihoods.
